Construction of Lot T, Binghamton University’s newest parking lot, began on Tuesday, Oct. 7.
The lot, which is located between Johnson and O’Connor Halls of Dickinson Community, is scheduled to be completed by early December, according to an Oct. 7 B-Line. It will include 80 spaces, which are set to make up for some of the spaces lost because of the East Campus Housing construction.
Tree removal began on Thursday, Oct. 9.
Richard Andrus, a professor in the environmental studies department, sent Binghamton University President Lois B. DeFleur an e-mail on the subject. He said that the environmental community only found out that the parking lot was being built on Oct. 8.
“This was rather a shock, as there is usually some forewarning of an activity with such environmental impact, but not in this case,” Andrus said in the e-mail.
He listed several reasons for his disapproval, including the fact that cutting down carbon-sequestering trees to make room for carbon dioxide-emitting vehicles doesn’t set a good example.
Physical Facilities spokeswoman Karen Fennie could not be reached for comment Monday.
