What do Tiger Woods and the Binghamton University golf team have in common?
They both tried to make a move on Sunday, but came up just short, with second-place finishes. While it was on a bigger stage for Woods at the Masters, it was the New England Championship for the Bearcats.
Binghamton finished second in the 13-team field, shooting a final round of 295 to total 587 strokes, which was just four behind the Yale Bulldogs’ 583. Sacred Heart finished third at 596, followed by Harvard at 598 and Dartmouth at 606 to round out the top five. The 36-hole tournament was held Saturday and Sunday at the par-72, 6,595-yard Triggs Golf Course in Providence, R.I. where Binghamton finished fifth of 17 teams last season.
The Bearcats were led by senior Ryan Gabel, who carded a final-round two-under 70 to tie for fourth place out of 64 individuals with a 144. Senior Zach Vinal shot a 147 to tie for eighth place, while freshman Jake Katz tied for 10th with a 149. Sophomores Patrick Donovan and Mike Corbo each shot 150 to tie for 15th.
The Bearcats conclude their spring season next weekend at the Penn State Rutherford Invitational.
