Although the sun has set on the Binghamton University golf team’s season, head coach Bernie Herceg has nothing to lose sleep over at the end of the day. The Bearcats’ season came to a close this past weekend with the team posting a sixth-place result at the Cavalier Classic, hosted by the University of Virginia.

The men can proudly boast two tournament wins this season, as well as a program-best fifth-place finish at the America Sky Conference tournament.

‘This past one was a good tournament. Jake Katz performed unbelievably, and the rest of the team played alright,’ Herceg said. ‘We are in the process of reaching our goal of winning the conference tournament next year.’

Junior Katz finished his season in impeccable form with an individual finish of third place and scores of 74 and 70. Enjoying another season as Binghamton’s No. 1 man, Katz is expected to be even better in his last year as a Bearcat.

The team is losing its two senior captains to graduation ‘ Mike Corbo and Patrick Donovan have proven their worth time and again as consistent and valuable members of the traveling roster.

‘Throughout their time here they’ve just been great players for the program,’ Herceg said. ‘Pat was a really big part of the success in the fall and the spring ‘ We’re definitely going to miss him and Mike.’

The Bearcats are adding two new golfers to the roster next fall with the recruitment of Paul Andrews of Corning and Brice Edmister of Rochester, two players that Herceg is excited to have.

‘These are two very established players in our region and I’m really looking forward to how they’re going to do in the New York state championships,’ Herceg said. ‘They both have the potential to win it.’

Although the loss of the two team captains creates some pretty big shoes to fill, Herceg is very enthusiastic for the 2010-11 seasons.

‘Our team is going to be stronger, more competitive and a better team next year,’ he said. ‘Overall, I think we’re really looking good.’
