Funnel cake, live music and rides. No, it’s not the county fair, it’s Binghamton University’s Spring Fling.

When Spring Fling 2007 was wrapping up, plans for 2008 were just beginning. The Student Association Programming Board wanted to see what went wrong, what needed to come back and what brand new ideas they could come up with for 2008.

Sandi Dube, vice president of programming, said planning Spring Fling is a major task.

“It’s always a learning process,” Dube said. “All of the committees have been working very hard to pull this together.”

Lifehouse is headlining the event, with support from Matt Nathanson and Late Nite’s Battle of the Bands winner, Soundhouse.

According to Meghan Wdowski, the Festival Chair, the concerts will be held in the same spot as last year.

“The day and night concerts will be held right in front of the Student Wing, facing the library,” Wdowski said. “Local and student bands will be playing from noon to 5 p.m., Soundhouse at 6 p.m., Every Avenue at 7 p.m., Matt Nathanson at 8 p.m. and Lifehouse at 9:15 p.m.”

Singer Matt Nathanson’s music is often described as indie folk. His songs have been featured on television programs like “Private Practice” and “Scrubs.” This will also be his first time in Binghamton.

This will be Soundhouse’s second performance at Spring Fling; last year they opened for band Reel Big Fish.

Popular rides like the Pirate Ship are expected to return, with the possibility of a new one. Spring Flingers can also expect to see novelties such as an Oxygen Bar, Henna artist and much more.

What’s a Spring Fling without the food? Everybody’s favorite foods, funnel cakes and fried dough, are set to hit BU’s campus again along with both veggie and beef burgers, hot dogs, chips, cornbread, fries, spiedies and more. Binghamton is famous for spiedies, so try one if you haven’t already. Food is free for students.

“The hardest part [of the planning was] where the location [was] going to be,” Wdowski said. But after confirming that Spring Fling would take place on the “spine” of the campus, all original plans are now able to be carried out. So expect to bring another stressful year at Binghamton University to a close with rides, music and food — especially fried Oreos!
