The Binghamton Center for Writers will kick off its spring Readers’ Series tonight when Binghamton University alumna and famed fiction writer Bobbie Ann Mason reads from her latest work, a collection of linked stories called “Nancy Culpepper.”
Mason is most famous for penning “Shiloh and Other Stories,” but has also written four other collections of short stories, a biography of Elvis and four novels — including the New York Times bestseller “In Country,” which was recently turned into a feature film.
Christine Gelineau, associate director of BU’s creative writing program who also helped to organize the event, said she feels Mason is a great addition to the Readers’ Series.
“It is always particularly of interest for students to meet and hear a successful writer who is also an alumna of Binghamton,” she said.
Mason has had a highly acclaimed career, including nominations for the National Book Critics Circle award, the American Book Award and the P.E.N./Faulkner Award for fiction.
According to Gelinau, Mason was chosen to be the first reader in the spring series because she asked to read during a time when she would be able to enjoy the Binghamton winter weather.
“She is a Southerner but she came to love snow during her time in the Northeast so she asked me to schedule her for February in hopes we would have snow,” Gelineau said. “It doesn’t look like we’ll be able to accommodate that hope very well this time.”
