Students can attend a crash course in “causing a scene” this week, with the help of comedian Charlie Todd.

Todd, of the comedy prank group Improv Everywhere, is set to visit Binghamton University this Friday to perform a show titled “How to Cause a Scene.”

The group, which was founded in 2001, is famous for the “No Pants Subway Ride,” an event that takes place every January in New York City, along with many other organized pranks, or “missions.”

“Improv Everywhere is an improv group that brings people together to do random acts of improv around NYC,” said Ashlee Yilmaz, Student Association Programming Board variety chair.

The show was chosen by the SAPB after considering input from students regarding who they want to come to campus.

“We send out a survey in the beginning of the year, and Todd was one of the most requested people we had,” said Aaron Cohn, vice president for programming for the SAPB. “Students wanted it and we wanted to bring it.”

The event will feature two parts: an MP3 experiment in the afternoon and a presentation by Todd in the evening.

The MP3 event is one of Improv Everywhere’s most popular events, and it has been brought to many college campuses in New York. The experiment, which is free for all, will allow students a chance to meet and spend time with Todd. It requires participants to download an audio clip with silly instructions for everyone to follow. Participants then meet in a public place and follow the instructions together, drawing attention and thus “creating a scene.”

Students can sign up to participate in the MP3 event Tuesday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Food Court of the New University Union. The actual experiment will take place by the fountain Friday from 12:30 to 1:15 p.m.

The second part of the show, Todd’s presentation, will take place at 8 p.m. in the Mandela Room of the Old University Union, and the door opens at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, which will be sold at the door, will be $2 for students and $5 for the public.

The Binghamton Crosbys are to set open for Todd.

“Todd is definitely going to be one of the most unique things to come to campus,” Cohn said. “He created a cult phenomenon around the world, and is going to give a hilarious show on Friday night.”

Students can find out more information on the event at the Facebook group, “How to Cause a Scene with Charlie Todd of Improv Everywhere.” The SAPB is also set to bring the Upright Citizen’s Brigade, a stand-up group, to campus in mid-April.
