David Sedaris, a Binghamton-born, Grammy-nominated author, is set to address graduates this semester at the second annual fall commencement ceremony. Sedaris will also receive an honorary doctorate at the Dec. 14 ceremony.
The critically acclaimed author, best known for memoir essay collections like “Me Talk Pretty One Day,” “Naked” and this summer’s best-seller, “When You Are Engulfed in Flames,” is regularly featured on National Public Radio and Public Radio International’s “This American Life.” Sedaris, 51, is widely recognized as one of the most influential modern humor writers. He is also the winner of the 2001 Thurber Prize for American Humor.
“When You Are Engulfed in Flames” topped The New York Times Best Seller List in the non-fiction category from June 22, 2008 to July 27, 2008.
Binghamton University President Lois B. DeFleur said the University is excited to welcome Sedaris.
“We are very pleased to be able to honor Mr. Sedaris for his talent, his many accomplishments, his broad perspectives and his humor,” DeFleur said.
Sedaris, who grew up in North Carolina, is currently promoting his book, “When You Are Engulfed in Flames,” with stops in Germany throughout November. He will return to the East Coast before the ceremony in December, when he will visit Syracuse, Poughkeepsie and New York City, among other locations.
In October of 2006, Sedaris returned to BU for a reading of several new essays, including a series of fictionalized animal fables.
The author’s books, 7 million copies of which are currently in print, have been translated into over 25 languages.
Fame is no stranger to the Sedaris family, however.
The author’s younger sister, Amy, is an actress, writer and comedian, and is well known for her role in the TV series and movie “Strangers With Candy,” and the book “I Like You: Hospitality Under the Influence.” Sedaris and his sister have written several plays together under the pen name, The Talent Family.
