It’s only been three weeks into the Binghamton Senators’ 2008-09 AHL season, and they have only played one home game so far.
Most teams tend to play better at home behind the support of their fans, but these weeks have shown that the B-Sens don’t seem to have any trouble excelling on the road, as they currently have a 4-1-1-1 record heading into tonight’s home matchup against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers.
On Oct. 17, the B-Sens fell to Syracuse in a shootout during their home opener. The Crunch managed to come back from a two-goal deficit in the third period by scoring a pair of goals in a span of less than three minutes and continued the surge to put four of five shots past goalie Brian Elliott for a shootout victory.
Binghamton then traveled to Philadelphia the next night to take on the Phantoms, earning a 3-1 victory. Goaltender Jeff Glass stopped 24 of 25 shots on his first start of the season, with rookie forward Zack Smith netting a goal to extend his goal-scoring streak to three games.
Smith then had another outstanding performance against the Albany River Rats in a 4-3 victory on Oct. 22. The B-Sens found themselves down three goals in the middle of the second period before slowly mounting a comeback to send the game into overtime. Smith tied the game at 3-3 with 22 seconds left in regulation, only to score the game winner 33 seconds into the overtime period.
The road trip continued when Binghamton traveled to Syracuse for a rematch against the Crunch, losing 4-3 in overtime. This time the B-Sens squandered a two-goal lead, only to fall in the extra minutes.
The last stop on the trip was in Hershey, Pa., where the B-Sens found themselves part of another comeback, only to fall short of a victory. Matt Carkner and Brendan Bell added offensive support from the defense with a pair of goals late in the third period, but the comeback ceased when a game-tying goal was waived off and the buzzer sounded to signal a 3-2 regulation loss.
Throughout this three-week period, there have been several noticeable changes to the Binghamton roster. Brian Lee, who played the first five games of the Ottawa Senators’ 2008-09 season, was assigned back to Binghamton, where he will be expected to help the defensive effort in addition to developing into a full time NHL player.
Then Ottawa Senators’ starting goaltender, Martin Gerber, pulled a muscle in practice, resulting in Binghamton’s Elliott being called up to fill his place until returning from injury.
This week, the B-Sens return home to Broome County to play the Bridgeport Sound Tigers in a pair of weekend games on Friday and Saturday nights. The Sound Tigers are also off to a solid start to the season with a 5-2-1 record. Bridgeport goaltender Peter Mannino is heading into Binghamton leading the league in goals against and save percentage among goaltenders and is coming off a 2-0 shutout against the Worcester Sharks on Saturday, Oct. 25.
However, the B-Sens were 5-3 against Bridgeport last season with Jeff Glass winning all three of his starts against the team and forward Josh Hennessy netting 10 points.
