Just a few months before the release of “Great Danger,” pop-punk band The Audition revealed a 15-second video preview of the new album, featuring echoing guitar notes and a red lightning bolt, which served as a message for all fans to get excited.
The teaser left enough room for both mystery and anticipation, while promising yet another impressive album from The Audition.
“Great Danger” is the band’s fourth full-length album from Victory Records, and the band will showcase their recent music on a national tour beginning March 25. There’s no doubt that The Audition has been hard at work, since it’s been only 11 months since its previous record made its debut.
Although “Great Danger” was released in a relatively short time, the Chicago-based quartet felt no reason to keep its latest songs hidden from the public.
“We had a bunch of songs previously written, so we asked ourselves, ‘Why not?’” lead singer Danny Stevens explained. “We decided to go in the recording studio instead of holding them off for another year-and-a-half.”
There’s no doubt The Audition’s music has evolved since its earliest album, “Controversy Loves Company,” which first launched the band onto the music scene. The group has a method of creating new, catchy songs while remaining true to the elements that make The Audition unique.
“We’re really finding our niche, and we figure out what we want to do with every song we write,” Stevens said. “With every album released, we figure out what people want to hear.”
“You Ruined This,” which was the record’s first song to stream off the band’s MySpace page, currently has over 50,000 plays. Each song makes you feel like you’re hearing it for the first time, no matter how many times it’s been played. The songs holds valuable meanings that connect perfectly to their quotable lyrics.
Stevens explained the band drew inspiration from all aspects of life, such as uncovering old experiences from the past.
“I love writing songs, and it’s a pretty collective effort. It’s not all just one person writing since we all work together,” Stevens said.
Despite the fact that they are collaborating their talent for the same band, each member has a different music genre flowing through his speakers.
Stevens is an avid country fan, while guitarist Seth Johnson listens to old-school rock and bassist Timothy Klepek prefers a combination of hip hop and R&B. Each member’s musical tastes combine to create the unique quality that defines The Audition’s sound.
Every song brings a different musical aspect alive, with each track highlighting a distinct quality. It’s simple for one to become drawn into the suspenseful tone of tracks such as “Honest Mistake.”
The energetic pop sound of “Ms. Crumby” may have been unexpected, though Alternative Press magazine recommends this track as the essential song to download.
“We weren’t thinking that we wanted to write songs in a certain way,” said Stevens. “We just write — and whatever comes out, comes out.”
The momentum displayed by the determination, creativity and teamwork of the band pays off in the distinct and catchy songs that prove to be likeable by anyone. Those who have yet to listen to any album off The Audition’s discography will rejoice in the discovery of their new favorite band.
