For Restaurant Week, my photographer, Kai, and I headed to the heart of downtown to try a variety of dinner options at Saké-Tūmi.
Located at 71 Court St. and operating for over a decade, Saké-Tūmi offers a three-course meal of Asian fusion cuisine for $25. As we walked into the space, we were greeted by warm lighting and autumn-themed decorations to welcome the season. After being seated at one of the high tables by our amazing waitress, we eagerly pored over the menu and decided what to order.
For our starter course, I selected the gyoza and Kai opted for the miso soup. The gyoza was crispy and the flavors of the pork, veggies and soy sauce blended perfectly. With chives, seaweed and tofu, the miso soup was salty and flavorful, and came in a generous portion.
Saké-Tūmi’s second course had a selection of sushi and kitchen dishes. We ordered two entrees from each menu, the nigiri and maki platter for an additional $3 and the chicken bang bang entree.
The platter had five types of nigiri — red tuna, white tuna, salmon, red snapper and yellowtail — and a choice between a spicy tuna or California roll. We opted for the California roll, which was a great choice, as the sushi was topped with roe that added tremendously to the flavor.
Each piece of nigiri was fresh and pleasant. The tuna varieties melted in our mouths, with an extra punch of flavor that made them our favorites of the night. Like the California roll, the red snapper nigiri was topped with roe for an added kick. The salmon and yellowtail nigiri also stood out, tasting particularly bright and flavorful.
Kai, who had spent a year abroad in Japan, said the nigiri was some of the best sushi he had tried in Binghamton. With a variety of tastes and textures, the platter is certainly worth the extra $3.
Fried in tempura batter and coated in a Thai chili sauce, the chicken was crunchy and flavorful. The sauce had a bit of sweetness, which evened out the spice and heightened the dish. The dish came with a side of jasmine rice topped with chives and a wedge of lime, and adding the lime to the chicken brightened up the flavor. With a generous portion size, I took leftovers home to eat later.
The third course offered dessert and drink options. We ordered two servings of mochi ice cream, one strawberry and one green tea flavored. The strawberry mochi had a pleasant fruity flavor that wasn’t too overpowering, making it my favorite of the two. Kai’s favorite, the green tea mochi, was bitter and sophisticated, which complemented the sweet whipped cream well. The dessert was a perfect end to a delicious meal.
We left dinner completely satisfied with each of our choices. With a variety of options featuring different cuisines, there’s something for everyone at Saké-Tūmi. For an inexpensive, delicious meal, be sure to stop by before Restaurant Week ends on Oct. 23!
