It’s not just NCAA teams that have learned to respect Binghamton University baseball ‘ Major League Baseball is starting to take notice too. Bearcat junior outfielder Henry Dunn was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in the 50th round of June’s MLB Draft, and has reportedly signed with the team.
Dunn was named to the America East All-Rookie Team and second-team All-Conference in his freshman season, while also being named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American. After a redshirted second year and an injury-plagued third year, he emerged as a force this season. He hit .344 with 10 home runs and 51 RBI, stealing 13 bases and setting a team record with 64 runs scored.
‘Henry was a very dynamic player for us in many ways, offensively, defensively,’ said Binghamton head coach Tim Sinicki. ‘I think we were fortunate to get him and be instrumental in his development, but at the same time he had a tremendous amount of ability and worked hard to get himself in a situation where he got noticed by some professional people ‘ Now we hope he can continue playing well as a professional and hopefully find his way into the organization with the Indians.’
It is the third straight year that BU had a player drafted in the MLB Draft. Pitcher Murphy Smith was selected in the 13th round last year by the Oakland Athletics, and pitcher Jeff Dennis was selected in the 40th round by the A’s the year before. Dunn is the first position player selected from BU in the Draft since Dan Gray and Dirk Gorman in 1990 by the Dodgers.
