While many people associate October with pumpkins and falling leaves, to baseball fans it means one thing and one thing only: playoffs. After a rare one-year hiatus, the New York Yankees find themselves back in postseason action and they’re looking to make up for last year’s less-than-stellar season. Leading the entire league with 103 regular season wins, this is a team that shouldn’t settle for anything less than a championship.

After easily winning their first postseason game on Wednesday night against the Minnesota Twins, they’ve certainly lived up to their high expectations. Before that game, you couldn’t turn on ESPN without hearing the same criticism over and over again. Instead of focusing on the numerous strengths of the Yankee lineup, all that was talked about was the tendency for Alex Rodriguez and C.C. Sabathia to choke once October rolled around.

Fortunately for Yankee fans, both Rodriguez and Sabathia wasted no time in silencing those critics. After having just one RBI in his last 59 postseason at-bats and going 0-for-18 with runners in scoring position, A-Rod impressed going 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Sabathia also shook off his postseason jitters, striking out eight and giving up just two runs in 6 2/3 innings. The Yankees appear to have no weaknesses and with their star players finally living up to the hype when it counts most, what can stop them from going the distance?

As strange as it may sound, their biggest distraction on their quest for their 27th championship may actually come from one of their own players. Star catcher and veteran Yankee Jorge Posada has recently been very outspoken about being benched for Game 2 of the ALDS in favor of back-up catcher Jose Molina. Manager Joe Girardi said the reason for the substitution is simply that he feels Game 2 starter A.J. Burnett and Molina have been working so well together that he doesn’t want to interrupt their chemistry. When asked to comment on Girardi’s decision, Posada seemed noticeably peeved saying, “I just hope we win that game. That’s all I’ve got to say.”

That’s all you have to say, Jorge? Well, all I’ve got to say is grow up! Everyone knows that you obviously want to play in the game, but it’s every player’s duty to do what’s best for the team, not what’s best for the individual. The statistics don’t lie; Burnett has pitched noticeably better with Molina as his catcher. Posada could have easily made a statement saying that he wishes he could be in the game helping out his team, but that he’s sure Molina will do a great job. Instead, he chose to respond in a way that was immature for any player, but was even more childish for a veteran player with such a strong bond to his team. Jorge, you need to shut your mouth and just play ball.

To make his comments look even worse, he played dismal defense in Game 1 of the ALDS when he let by two passed balls on miscommunications with Sabathia. If the Twins manage to bust up Burnett in Game 2, I can see some major disputes arising in the Yankee locker room as a result. The last thing this team needs is petty arguments getting in the way of what could easily be a deep postseason run.
