Our student government has become paralyzed in a cesspool of petty in-fighting and entirely forgotten its purpose: to represent its constituents, the students.
The last two Student Assembly meetings have seen members walk out because of elections, preventing the meetings from functioning as they should. Police had to intervene at last week’s meeting, and three elected student officials, unbelievably, have made racist comments.
Student government as it stands right now — if you can consider it standing — is entirely unacceptable, and we hope next year’s incarnation learns from the incredible missteps this year’s has taken.
Our student representatives need a reminder of how serious a task they are charged with. They have at their disposal a budget of $700,000, which is only set to increase next year. They are meant to be our voice to an administration that has never shown an affinity for student opinion, and their ineptitude at this task only makes it harder for students to voice their concerns.
The students should be the ones to fix this situation. Attend your community meetings next year, make sure your needs are being tended to. If they aren’t, vote to remove your representative immediately.
It’s a travesty that people who clearly can’t handle themselves properly are charged with handling our student body, and, even worse, that there’s too little time to remove each offender this year.
