A Binghamton University student is working to create a virtual college campus for students from across the country.
Keith Knee, a senior political science major, is a co-founder of CollegeFirsts.com, a Web site where students can share their college-related photos, videos and experiences.
“The dream of the site is that it’s going to be a virtual college campus where you can basically suffice your entertainment, recreational and academic needs,” he said.
Students can also post gossip on the Web site, which has a setup similar to that of Facebook and MySpace.
However, unlike JuicyCampus, a now-defunct site built around a similar feature which came under public scrutiny when users posted hate speech on its forums, Knee plans to have the gossip published on CollegeFirsts moderated.
“We will monitor the site when people start posting gossip,” he said, referring to a proposed self-moderation option which would allow users to flag inappropriate content.
Knee said he got the idea while with Jordan Winter, a 23-year-old from Los Angeles and childhood friend, after the two met on a vacation. They decided to merge the features of several college-oriented web sites into one.
“The best thing about the Internet is you can take the best things in these places and develop them in your own site,” Knee said.
Knee also plans to incorporate an educational function into the Web site, where students can receive help building their resumes and finding scholarships and internships.
Nick Jerge, a Buffalo State College graduate who works as a chief liaison between the site and college campuses, hopes the site will be a “one-stop shop for college students.”
Jerge also mentioned the possibility of adding a Google Maps “Street View” for each campus onto the site, so prospective students can see campuses prior to visiting them.
Knee hopes students will visit the Web site to view video content submitted by students.
Ben Lukens, a BU sophomore sociology major, spent one afternoon shooting a video on the site called “Pregnancy Scare.”
The short video is about two college students who experience a false positive on a pregnancy test after a one-night stand.
“It’s always something funny to laugh back on,” said Lukens, who believes many students go through the same experience.
Knee also plans to promote the site with other video content added to the Web site, such as the CollegeFirsts comedy tour and Blue Movies.
The site’s comedy tour, still in its developmental stages, would document amateur student-comedians from across the county as they perform onstage with professionals.
According to Knee, certain aspects of the tour, which would include improv, skit comedy and sketch scenes, would be streamed on CollegeFirsts.com.
“I would love to bring certain elements of it to Binghamton,” he said.
Blue Movies, which was nominated for best independent comedy at the New York Film Festival, is an original Web TV series about a student’s mishaps interning at a porn studio.
“It’s kind of like ‘The Office’ meets the porn industry,” Knee said.
The student, who wants to intern at a movie studio, gets an internship, only to realize that the company he is now working for is not what he envisioned.
However, while the series hints at X-rated humor, the graphic images do not.
“No nudity,” Knee said. “We specifically made it like Austin Powers where all the nudity is discreet.”
