Though resolutions usually go with New Years Eve, they are also rather common among students as classes start in September.

Everyone has something they want to do differently, or goals that they wish to achieve by the end of the semester. Many of us share similar objectives: Make friends, don’t slack off, join a gym, etc. But after years of making fall resolutions and failing to meet them, I’ve decided this year not to make a list, but instead to follow what I like to call a “problem-free philosophy.” Bonus points if you know what Disney movie I borrowed it from.

Unfortunately, only a week into classes, I broke my resolution to not make any resolutions.

Making a list is comforting, and though I know that almost everything that I write down will go unaccomplished by the end of the semester, it at least gives me a sense of direction. I also found that having a care-free mentality is close to impossible, especially as a pre-med student. I have a very unforgiving load of classes, and it’s impossible not to worry and obsess.

I know there are many people out there with similarly rigorous course loads, so at least I’m suffering in good company. If you are one of my fellow pre-health students, know that you are not alone. Together we will stress out about CAPA homework sets, experience all-nighters and spend countless hours studying for exams. Together, we shall overcome this!

(And if you happen to have any of last year’s Organic Chemistry material, you know who to call.)

For most of us, half the battle will just be finding the motivation to study and concentrate. Losing motivation is easy with the amount of free time we have in college, as opposed to back home. You keep putting things off, thinking you have lots of time and then before you know it, it’s the last minute and you’re cramming. Again.

So with all this in mind, here’s my first resolution: Stay motivated. And I think I’ll just end it at that, because for this year, instead of trying to follow a whole list of resolutions, I’ll just try to keep it simple.

Baby steps.
