Are finals and the heat getting you down? Well, raise your spirits “UP” because the summer movie season is finally upon us and it has been a long time coming. Release offers a definitive guide to the biggest summer blockbusters. Whether you’re looking to spend a “Night at the Museum” or at “District 9,” there’s something for everybody. If those aren’t to your liking, there are some “Funny People” you can check out, like “Bruno” or the “Inglorious Basterds.” Or embrace your inner geek and spend some time with some old favorites like the Terminator, the Transformers and Harry Potter. Terminators and Transformers and wizards, oh my!

“Star Trek” (Now Playing) — J.J. Abrams reboots the franchise by telling the origins of Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock’s (Zachary Quinto) friendship and how they became officers aboard the Enterprise. It also depicts how the whole crew came together, which includes fan favorites like Sulu (John Cho), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Scotty (Simon Pegg), Chekov (Anton Yelchin) and McCoy (Karl Urban).

“Terminator Salvation” (May 21) — After the leak of Christian Bale’s on-set rant on YouTube, Bale hopes to salvage his career by taking over the role of John Connor and leading the human resistance against SkyNET and the Terminators. Joining Bale is Sam Worthington, who plays Marcus Wright, a fellow Terminator who embarks on a mission with Connor as they uncover the truth behind the possible extermination of humankind.

“Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” (May 22) — Ben Stiller reprises his role of night guard Larry Daley, and this time Larry must try and save his inanimate friends from what could be their last stand amid the wonders of the world’s largest museum, the Smithsonian. Jedediah Smith (Owen Wilson) and Theodore Roosevelt (Robin Williams) return while Amelia Earhart (Amy Adams) and General George Custer (Bill Hader) are newcomers.

“UP” (May 29) — You can’t go wrong with Pixar. In this next outing by Pixar, a 78-year-old man named Carl Fredricksen (Edward Asner) spent his entire life wishing for adventures. But soon, his lifelong dream comes true when he ties thousands of balloons to his house and flies away to the wilds of South America. One problem: he’s joined by a persistent 8-year-old wilderness explorer named Russell.

“Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen” (June 24) — The most anticipated movie of the summer almost never made it to the big screen on time due to star Shia LaBeouf’s car crash, which severely damaged his left hand. Thankfully, LaBeouf manned up and finished filming the sequel in which Sam Witwickey (LaBeouf) discovers the origins of the Transformers, and the evil Decepticons need to capture Sam for information. Besides looking forward to robots destroying each other, the beautiful yet modest Megan Fox returns as Sam’s girlfriend, Mikaela.

“Public Enemies” (July 1) — In this true-crime drama directed by Michael Mann, FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) attempts to track down American gangster John Dillinger (Johnny Depp), a bank robber whose exploits dominated the press during the public enemy era.

“Bruno” (July 10) — “Borat” was so 2006, it’s 2009 bitches! This time, Sacha Baron Cohen plays Bruno, a gay, Austrian TV reporter who worms his way into style hot-spots in another mockumentary comedy film. Possible cameo by Paula Abdul.

“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” (July 17) — In the penultimate HP film, Harry prepares for the final showdown against Voldemort by studying Voldemort’s unpleasant past with the help of Dumbledore. Look forward to new characters showing up like Professor Slughorn and Lavender Brown. Love is also in the air for Harry, Ron and Hermione, and tragedy is just around the corner for one beloved character.

“Funny People” (July 31) — The newest film from Judd Apatow finds Adam Sandler playing a comedian who has a near-death experience and must decide what’s important in his life. Seth Rogen also plays a comedian who is taken under Sandler’s wing. Leslie Mann and Eric Bana co-star.

“District 9” (August 14) — Not much is known about this film other than the fact that it’s produced by Peter Jackson. It has a “Cloverfield”-esque feel to it based on the secrecy of the plot. Supposedly, “District 9” depicts a fictional world where extraterrestrials have become refugees in South Africa. Want to learn more about it? Check out the trailer.

“Inglorious Basterds” (August 21) — Quentin Tarantino directs Brad Pitt and Diane Kruger in a story about a special unit of Jewish-American soldiers who are sent behind enemy lines so that they can instill shock and fear among German troops in Nazi-occupied France. In addition, the film also follows a young Jewish woman who goes on a revenge mission to avenge the death of her parents by the Nazis.
