The Democrats need to stop making history. Barack Obama needs to stop making history. The people of this country can’t take any more history. The majority of the media has failed in its duty to rake the Democratic Party over the fiery coals of public criticism for their utter lack of anything approaching an economic solution.
Liberal elements of the media would rather praise the Obama administration for all the little things they’ve accomplished: he closed down Gitmo, he reversed Bush on stem cells, um … did we mention he’s black? Not a peep about TARP (bailout money) buying private jets and paying million-dollar salaries to execs. It’s going to be our generation, freshmen and seniors alike, that will pay the consequences if our government doesn’t act like it cares. Don’t believe me? Ask an SOM graduate about his plans for next year and you’ll start to get my drift.
The Democratic Party got so used to blaming the Republicans and President Bush for the country’s troubles that they have yet to kick the habit. They spent eight years telling us they could do it better and now that they have the opportunity, they’re blowing it. We’re all going to need to take out loans of some sort in the near future — student loans, loans for a car, a mortgage someday, and I for one would really appreciate it if there was still someone around to make a loan that won’t ask for a pound of flesh in interest.
The kind of history coming from the White House is the kind of history we can’t dawdle on any longer. We did the whole “look at him, he’s cooler than Bush, he has a looser dress code” fawning. Oh yeah, when he rolls up his sleeves, Obama looks ready to get down and dirty. I’m sorry, but he’s the president, not an Abercrombie and Fitch model. Why did The New York Times do a front page article on this when there are so many more important things going on?
Following the subprime mortgage meltdown, the economy teetered on the edge of catastrophe. The thing finally tipped over the edge at the end of the presidential race, much to the fortune of the Obama campaign. In the first days of his presidency, Obama capitalized on the “never let a good crisis go to waste” philosophy and bemoaned his fate of inheriting the Bush legacy. But that hasn’t been going over so well lately. Every single time Obama talks the market tanks, even when it has nothing to do with the economy.
Now the administration has done an about face: The Associated Press reported on March 14 that “Obama Says U.S. Economy Sound, Reassures Investors.” Isn’t that one of those things McCain got nailed to the wall for in the presidential race? It doesn’t matter that Obama was the first black president to heat up a pop tart in the Oval Office microwave when the economy keeps sliding.
Apparently “Yes We Can” doesn’t apply to issues that can’t be fixed quickly or that don’t create a tidy political package. Positive thinking isn’t going to get us through this one. No one is clicking their heels together three times, closing their eyes and saying, “There’s no place like the Dow Jones at 16,000.” It’s going to take hard work, tough decisions and the kind of decisive thinking one can’t help but expect from a half term senator.
Obama mania needs to be over. Our leaders will only make the right choices for our future if they fear the sting of public opinion. Take off the “hope” T-shirt, because it’s March, and it’s starting to smell. Obama has yet to do anything worth the adulation that he’s getting. If your name isn’t Keith Olbermann, then you should not be touching yourself every single time Obama addresses the nation. Keith only gets away with it because he’s so bat-shit insane that he makes Gary Busey uncomfortable.
