How does your background and previous experience qualify you for this position?
I have spent 40 years as a professional union designer in an industry that requires problem-solving that must represent and serve a variety of interests in the same space, be done on time, and come in under budget. Alongside that work, I have taught in a variety of university programs across the country, which brings an understanding of institutions, systems and the variables that make them struggle or thrive.
In addition, I’ve worked in a variety of collaborative community groups solving our region’s needs, like building a playground, opening a library, running a farmer’s market, cleaning our streams and waterways, maintaining a historical society and supporting families with children in serious health situations. I run a not-for-profit literary center. I bring a wide perspective and a love of this place I chose.
What makes you a good candidate for young voters and students?
I value your opinions and believe that you should and must be a part of finding the solutions for the future. You will live it. I want to ensure that you have a representative voice. I need your engagement so that your voice and your vision are present in the conversation. I invite you to be a fully participating member of the team. Together we can build anything.
What motivated you to run for this position?
People deserve a choice. Rural representation is sorely lacking, and we need an advocate for central New York’s working families.
What do you view as the biggest weakness of the current administration, and how would you do things differently?
There is a clear lack of rural representation, its challenges and its potential. I will be that voice for my constituents, ensuring investment and environmental protections, particularly in our upstate regions, which are the source of so much of what we all need to live: water, air, food.
The lived experience of the rural voter is not universal. We live in a representative democracy, and that requires our elected representative to work for all the people. To represent their interests, to ensure that their voice is a part of the conversation when legislation is created and to provide constituent services. It requires trust. I ask for your vote and your trust.
In return, I will support our farms and small businesses. Protect our communities from short-sighted development. Expand access to basic needs like housing and broadband. Build partnerships that boost our local economy. Protect personal choice in all its forms. Provide healthcare for all. Protect New York’s environment and natural assets. I will keep you in the conversation and ensure that the small towns of New York can thrive and your grandchildren have a future where they can build a great life.
