Located in the heart of Binghamton’s West Side, That Coffee Place has served coffee, brunch and a sense of community for 13 years. Owned and run by Trudy Deiss-Savich and her husband, John, the cafe continues to make a name for itself as a staple in the local area.

In 2010, the couple opened their coffee shop at a co-op in the Finger Lakes region in New York. They relocated to the West Side 13 years ago, opening on Clinton Street and eventually finding a home on Seminary Avenue, welcoming community members and students every day.

The Deiss-Savich family was inspired by their love of coffee, lattes, smoothies and more, and were confident they could run a thriving business for anyone needing a caffeine boost.

“This shop is created by our passion of coffee and it shines through with every customer that enters,” Deiss-Savich wrote. “It’s definitely hard work, getting up early, being the barista, cook, baker, retail, working on orders, paperwork, but we love it.”

That Coffee Place dedicates itself to providing an inviting atmosphere where customers can feel safe, happy and loved. The cafe serves all customers — regulars or new, old or young, student or Binghamton resident — and the community loves it back.

“Owning our coffee shop has been so rewarding in ways we never dreamed of,” Deiss-Savich wrote. “Residents that have lived on the West Side, their whole lives, thanking us for bringing a cheerful shop back to the neighborhood. Students who can walk 3 doors down in their PJs, for a much needed caffeine fix. You might catch your professor or coach in here on a Saturday afternoon. We cherish every relationship from newborns to our dear friend Marylou, a vocal teacher who is now 93, to our spunky friend Liv, who just turned 100 years old!”

The cafe’s menu offers an assortment of all-day breakfast and lunch food options, including omelets, pancakes, waffles, burgers, salads, wraps, paninis and more. Deiss-Savich shared that one of her favorite menu items is the cranberry walnut salad with grilled chicken.

Additionally, That Coffee Place has a large drink menu, featuring coffee, tea, lattes, smoothies and energy drinks. Coffee is brewed with Finger Lakes Coffee Roasters beans, which Deiss-Savich believes is the best choice for baristas and customers alike.

That Coffee Place is no stranger to seasonal drinks, constantly serving specialty flavors that switch out depending on the season. The cafe plans to bring back its affogatos and add protein smoothies and açaí bowls to the menu.

As a family-owned business, one of the most valued aspects of the shop is that it gives the Deiss-Savich family opportunities to form close relationships with their customers.

“It’s been so nice watching our customers grow with us, engagements, weddings, babies,” Deiss-Savich wrote. “We watched a dear customer go through chemo last year but now, cancer free! Yay! When the students graduate and come in to say goodbye, there are tears, happy and sad.”

Deiss-Savich enjoys expressing her creativity with no limit through her fun signature drinks and food creations, a welcome perk of running her own business. Even on busy days, she told Pipe Dream that her creativity is what “keeps her going.”

That Coffee Place is looking forward to adding new experiences to foster the shop’s positive atmosphere. The Deiss-Savich family plans to introduce entertainment, music, poetry readings, trivia games and more. The cafe will also take part in Binghamton’s annual Porchfest.

Deiss-Savich has high hopes for the future of That Coffee Place and hopes to share her creative and fun environment with the Binghamton community for many years to come.

“I hope the community gathers here at That Coffee Place far into the future and takes us to many more exciting milestones here, with our friends,” Deiss-Savich wrote.
