Help Kai with Recovery from Hate Crime

Kai is a compassionate, hardworking student who has received bachelor's degree from Shandong University, and master's degree from both Stony Brook University and Binghamton University. He was brutally attacked while walking in downtown Binghamton.

In his own words:

I was attacked by a group of people on Thursday, possibly between 8:30 pm to 9:00 pm, while I was taking a routine walk around Recreation Park near my apartment. I believe I was targeted because I am Asian.

I was not feeling safe in that area as I walked that night. First, a white sedan drove by slowly, scared me on my way to the Recreation Park. Then I saw two people trying to approach and follow me, so I started to walk back home as fast as I could. Then I saw the white sedan again, so I crossed to the other side of the road to keep safe. It is possible that the people in the white sedan gave the people the order to assault me. The two people ran very fast toward me, and then I was assaulted and thrown to the ground. My head hit the ground first, as a result I lost consciousness immediately. I don't remember what happened to me for a period of time except that I was lying on the ground unconscious for more than an hour. I woke up after 10 pm and found myself lying there with a lot of blood on my head, and later learned my wallet, phone and keys were stolen. I tried to stop a car that was driving by, and the driver, a kind lady, helped me call the police and an ambulance.

After the police talked with me, I was rushed to Lourdes Hospital. I started to cry as soon as I was transferred to the ambulance; I know what happened to me was wrong and I didn't deserve it, especially as an international Chinese student in this community. In the hospital I had a CT scan and learned that I had head injury, an acute epidural hematoma and left temporal fracture. Since I needed major neurosurgery quickly, I was transferred to UHS Wilson Hospital and had surgery around 5 am the next morning to relieve the pressure from swelling of the brain and repair the skull fracture.

I am grateful that I was in the right place to receive the necessary care. If I had not awakened that night or if the people who assaulted me beat me harder, I could have lost my life in that situation. After the surgery, I was kept in the ICU for more than three days to be monitored, then was transferred to a normal ward, and finally discharged Monday night.

Now that Kai has returned to his apartment where he is recovering, he continues to deal with debilitating pain and has challenges to overcome, as well as a long road of physical and mental recovery ahead of him.  He will start receiving counseling from a professional therapist because of this traumatized incident. The money from this fundraiser will help to make sure Kai has everything he needs while he recovers.
