After a scoreless first half, the Binghamton women’s soccer team (5-2-3, 1-0-1 AE) broke through after the break, scoring three goals in a 28-minute span to defeat Bryant University (2-5-2, 0-1-0 AE) 3-0 Sunday afternoon at Bearcats Sports Complex.
The win moved Binghamton to 5-2-3 overall and 1-0-1 in America East play, keeping the Bearcats unbeaten through their first two conference games. Binghamton also extended its conference unbeaten streak to 16 games, dating back to the 2024 season.
The Bearcats controlled the game early, but their pressure did not immediately translate to the scoreboard. Binghamton created several chances in the first half, including a shot from senior defender Sophia Garofalo that hit the crossbar and a shot from junior forward Jahkaya Davis that the Bryant goalkeeper saved.
Despite the chances, the teams entered halftime tied 0-0.
“We’ve been waiting for a moment like this just because the past few games we’ve been kind of struggling to get the ball [to the] back of the net,” senior midfielder and forward Paige Luke said.
The Bearcats came out of the break with more attacking pressure. Just four minutes into the second half, senior defender Megan Baker sent a cross from the right side into the box, where Luke positioned herself in front of the defender and headed the ball into the net.
The goal opened up the attack for Binghamton. The Bearcats continued to create chances while limiting Bryant’s opportunities, eventually doubling their lead in the 64th minute.
Luke played the ball to freshman midfielder Chelsea Donaldson, who sent a 10-yard left-footed shot into the lower right corner. The goal gave Binghamton a 2-0 advantage.
“I thought we just showed good quality on the ball,” said Head Coach Neel Bhattacharjee. “I thought we always had good options in terms of things on the ball.”
Binghamton added its third goal in the 78th minute. Luke and Baker combined to set up Davis, who finished the chance for her fourth goal of the season.
Luke finished the afternoon with one goal and two assists, contributing to all three of Binghamton’s goals. The performance also marked a three-point afternoon for Luke.
The Bearcats remained strong defensively throughout the game. Bryant recorded only one shot, while senior goalkeeper Rebecca Kessler recorded her seventh shutout of the season. Binghamton finished with a 17-1 advantage in shots and a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.
The win gave Binghamton three points in its second America East Conference game after the Bearcats opened conference play with a 1-1 tie against UMass Lowell. The Bearcats will travel to UAlbany on Thursday, Oct. 1, for their next conference matchup at the Bob Ford Field at Tom & Mary Casey Stadium at 6:30 p.m., where they will look to extend their conference unbeaten streak.
