Binghamton University senior Alexandre Haggai failed to qualify for the ITA Men’s All-American Tennis Championships after competing in the event’s pre-qualifying tournament this past weekend.Hosted by University of Tulsa, the tournament featured more than 200 players, but Haggai was Binghamton’s only representative. The players were vying for the opportunity to compete for the first national title of the 2011-12 college tennis season.Haggai competed twice over the weekend, winning his first match 6-3, 7-6 against Ben Hoogland of William & Mary College. He made it to the third round of the tournament before losing to Ulrik Thomsen of George Washington University. The match remained close throughout, with Haggai winning set one by a score of 6-7 and losing the second set 7-5. In the tie-breaking set, though, Thomsen pulled away to win 6-4 and advance.Placed in the pre-qualifying bracket, Haggai would have had to win four matches to secure one of the 16 spots open in the qualifying bracket of the tournament.Haggai and the Bearcats will be competing in the Cornell Invitational this weekend. The event, featuring Yale University, the United States Military Academy (Army), and host team Cornell University, is one of the three remaining scheduled tournaments of the fall season for BU.The Yale Bulldogs are led by senior and captain Erik Blumenkranz, whose fall season last year was highlighted by winning the USTA Billy Jean King National Tennis Center Men’s College Invitational singles draw.Army is coming off an impressive 10-6 singles record and 2-0 doubles mark at last weekend’s Saint Joseph’s University Invitational in Philadelphia. The host Big Red has only seen action at the Princeton Invitational earlier in September.Action in Ithaca is set to begin on Saturday and continue on Sunday.
