Juniors Bastian Bornkessel and Ruben Devos of the Binghamton University men’s tennis team advanced all the way to the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional doubles semifinal match before losing 8-3 against Harvard University on Monday.

The USTA/ITA Northeast Regional, hosted this year by Cornell University, is a six-day tournament featuring a 128-man singles draw and a 32-team doubles draw. The tournament opened on Oct. 13 and ends today.

Bornkessel and Devos competed at an extremely high level throughout the tournament, winning their first three matches 8-4, 8-5 and 8-0 against Cornell, Princeton University and Fairleigh Dickinson University, respectively. Their fourth win against the Columbia University team, which had just defeated the top-seeded Brown University, advanced the Bearcat duo into the semifinals.

“I think this was the furthest we’ve ever gone in the [USTA/ITA] doubles tournament,” BU head coach Adam Cohen said.

The Bearcats fell against the third-seeded Harvard team yesterday afternoon, and Cohen said it was the Bearcats’ serving in the match that just wasn’t good enough.

“We served well throughout the tournament,” Cohen said. “But we probably served worst in this match overall.”

The Bearcats are next scheduled to see action on Nov. 4 to compete in Cornell’s second invitational tournament of the fall season.
