Tuesday’s election for next year’s Binghamton University Council Student Representative concluded in a run-off.

The three candidates for the position were Robert Pim, a sophomore double-majoring in finance and mathematics; Habeeb Sheikh, a sophomore majoring in political science; and current representative Sarah Glose, a graduate student studying public administration. Neither candidate received 40 percent of the vote, the minimum required to win the election.

Glose earned 37.17 percent of the votes, Sheikh received 34.35 percent of the votes and Pim earned 28.48 percent of the votes. The run-off election will be between Glose and Sheikh.

The job of the student representative is to advocate for BU students, as well as communicate any concerns on behalf of the student body to the administration.

The council is composed of 10 members, nine of whom are appointed by the New York state governor. They are tasked with supervising various University operations, including recommending candidates for University president, reviewing budget requests and creating student conduct regulations.

In the past year Glose worked with Off-Campus College Transport (OCCT) to improve bus services and has been in contact with Graduate Student Organization (GSO) leaders. She said she will continue these actions if re-elected.

Habeeb Sheikh said in his campaign statement that his involvement with student government and discussions with minority groups on campus make him qualified to represent the student body.

A date for the run-off election has not been set yet, but will occur before the end of the current academic year.
