Students were evacuated from Brandywine Hall, a residential building in Susquehanna Community, shortly after an outdoor gas leak was detected at about 8 p.m. Saturday.

A bypass was installed to repair the break and residents of Brandywine were allowed to return to their building at around 9:50 p.m.

Due to low temperatures, condensation formed along the gas line and caused a rupture, according to Karen Fennie, spokeswoman for Physical Facilities.

The Vestal Fire Department ventilated the building and made sure the interior was safe before allowing students to re-enter.

Hot water was temporarily suspended throughout the building, but was restored later in the day.

No students were directly affected by the leak, Fennie said.

“We have systems in place where we are constantly monitoring our utilities, so if there is a problem we see it right away,” Fennie said. “There are a lot of sensors on vital equipment, so we are able to detect anything that goes wrong fairly quickly.”
