Former New York State senator Thomas Libous died today after a battle with cancer. He was 63 years old.

Libous was a Johnson City native, and attended Broome Community College before earning his B.S. in marketing and finance from SUNY Utica in 1975.

Launching his political career locally, he was elected to Binghamton city council and represented the South Side in 1984, and was re-elected in 1987.

Serving as state senator from January 1989 until July 2015, the former senator represented Broome, Tioga, Chenango and Delaware counties. He was an avid supporter of Southern Tier revitalization and Binghamton University, securing funding for projects such as the University Downtown Center, the Innovative Technologies Complex (ITC) and the Events Center.

According to the Press & Sun Bulletin, former sen. George Maziarz was with Libous recently before his death.

“He was a good man,” Maziarz said to the Press & Sun. “He did a lot for the Southern Tier. It’s just a sad time.”

Libous was first diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2009, and the disease later spread to his lungs. He entered hospice care at the end of last week.

The former senator is survived by his wife, Fran Libous, and two sons Matt and Nick.
