Coming off a season with mixed results, the Binghamton swimming and diving teams came into the year expecting a higher level of consistency and, so far, they are satisfied.

The men, undefeated so far this year, and the women, 1-1 thus far, have both performed well. Both teams started with a bang, winning 23 of 26 events at a dual meet at Canisius College on Oct. 15.

Pat Hart, a junior on the men’s swim team, says so far things have gone according to plan.

“We brought back most of our good swimmers, and got some great new ones on the team this year,” Hart said. “Things are going real well right now, we just have to keep it up.”

Head coach Patrice Back, who leads the men’s and women’s swim teams, has high aspirations for both groups this year, and is happy with how things have gone to this point.

“The swimming and diving season has gotten off to a great start,” she said. “Our dual meets have been a good indicator that this will be a great year. So far both the men and women have produced numerous season-best swim times and diving scores while setting pool records at Canisius and Boston University.”

Freshman Brian Koralewski, says the work is rigorous, but worth it.

“Training is hard, but it seems it’s going to pay off at the [America East] Championship,” Koralewski said.

When asked how they thought the team would fair this season, swimmers’ expectations were high. According to Koralewski, the team should finish “…at least second in the conference. If not first, then hopefully in the upcoming years.”

Hart echoed those sentiments, saying he thought this team has great talent. “We could really finish on top,” he said.

Coach Back, noting that the teams are training intensely to prepare for their conference championships in February, says that the rest of the year is sure to be exciting.

“I expect the rest of the dual meet season to be extremely challenging and should prepare the teams for championships,” Back said. “Training is tough right now, but I feel that the swimmers and divers are thriving on the challenges in the pool.”
