Softball player Deannie Plemon continued to create a buzz after drilling the go-ahead home run in the bottom of the sixth inning Thursday, helping the Bearcats to an 8-7 victory over the Colgate Red Raiders at East Gym Field.

Plemon, the America East Rookie of the Week several weeks ago, went 2-for-2 with two RBI, including a colossal home run that proved to be the game-winning hit. Plemon also made a spectacular defensive play in the fourth inning when she picked off Raider shortstop LaPorscha Albert at third base.

After overcoming an early 1-0 deficit, Binghamton (4-16) took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Bearcats took advantage of several wild pitches by Colgate pitcher Lacey Ver Steeg and a two-run single by freshman Kim Cleveland after consecutive walks and a hit batsmen.

The Bearcats added two runs in the second inning after a Sandy Meadows walk, and a double by Shannon McLeese put two runners in scoring position. Meadows then scored on a wild pitch by Ver Steeg. After back-to-back walks to senior Sara Eppolito and Plemon, senior third baseman Meghan Quinn notched an RBI when she drew a bases-loaded walk off of Colgate pitcher Jesse McCarrick.

Trailing 6-1 heading into the top of the fourth inning, Colgate tacked on four runs in the inning, including an RBI single by sophomore Amanda Eccleston, and a two-run double by junior second baseman Kortney Hannah.

Colgate tied the game at 6 in the sixth when freshman Brittany Hanrahan homered off of Binghamton pitcher Jessica Whitaker. The Raiders took the lead several batters later when freshman Maddy Shufelt doubled to center, scoring Hannah, who had singled earlier.

In the bottom of the sixth, with Eppolito standing at first after reaching on a fielder’s choice, Plemon crushed a McCarrick pitch over the left center field wall to put the Bearcats ahead to stay. It was her second home run of the season, which ties her for the team lead with Cyrilla Suker. She also leads the team with 15 RBI.

Whitaker pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to end the game. She struck out four in the complete-game effort.

The Bearcats were scheduled to travel to Maine this weekend for a three-game series against the Black Bears (2-29), but due to unplayable field conditions in Orono, the series was relocated to Binghamton’s East Gym Field.

A 1 p.m. doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday, with the series finale set for 11 a.m. Sunday. A large part of the Black Bears offense centers around freshman third baseman Terren Hall, who was named AE Rookie of the Week for the week ending March 30. She hit .450 with two home runs and eight RBI over the week, and has five home runs and 15 RBI overall.

Hall is the second Maine player to receive a weekly award. Junior Ashley Waters, who has five home runs and 11 RBI, was named the AE Player of the Week on Feb. 18.
