A local salon will hold a charity event on campus where hair and profit will be donated to Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that provides hairpieces for children who have suffered hair-loss due to long-term illnesses.
The Cutting Edge salon and Circle K, a student-run volunteer organization, are co-hosting this event, which will take place in the Hinman Dining Hall from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m on Tuesday, Nov. 17.
The mission of Locks of Love is to restore the self-esteem of children who lost their hair.
“This is not the first year that the event has come to campus,” said Lauren Anuszewski, president of Circle K. “Last year was a great success and we collected over six pounds of hair to be donated to make wigs.”
The Locks of Love event has been held on campus every fall and spring for eight years, and Cutting Edge, which is located in the Oakdale Mall, has participated at each event.
According to salon manager Keri Shedeker, the entire salon will be shut down for the day and all of the stylists will come to campus to participate in this event.
The stylists have donated their time and will be available for students for all basic salon services, such as cuts, trims, styling and blow-drying, Shedeker said.
“The reason we do this is because it is a good cause and it helps us to get our name out at the college,” Shedeker said.
If students are getting 7 inches or more of hair cut off, their trip to the stylist’s chair will be free of charge, and the hair will be donated to Locks of Love to make wigs.
If the donated hair is between 7 and 10 inches long, the hair will be donated to Locks of Love and then the organization will sell it to wig-making companies. If the donated hair measures 10 inches, the company can use it to make a full wig.
For students just looking for a haircut or trim, the cost will be $5 and all of that money will be donated to Locks of Love as well, Shedeker said.
Students can make an appointment, but walk-ins are welcomed and encouraged.
