Greek Life will report to Off Campus College instead of Campus Life beginning as early as next semester, in what Vice President for Student Affairs Brian Rose referred to as a small administrative change.
The move is just one in a series of proposed changes within the division of Student Affairs, which will also relocate volunteer services from OCC to Campus Life and internships from OCC to the Career Development Center.
Though Rose said he was very pleased with the support that Campus Life had given to the greek community, he also said he believes that the change will provide OCC with a clear focus to support off-campus students and “town-gown relations.”
“Fraternities and sororities are an important off-campus constituency,” Rose said, noting that many of the greek organizations operate from locations in the surrounding community.
Jack Causseaux, assistant director of Campus Life and adviser to fraternities and sororities, said he was unable to comment on the situation. But according to Rose, Causseaux will continue to work with the greek community, just under the OCC office instead of Campus Life.
The reorganization does not mean OCC and Campus Life will be cut off from all of their respective communities and volunteer programs, Rose said.
“Fundamentally, these are two offices within the same division [Student Affairs] who have worked closely with one another for years and who will continue to work collaboratively in support of a variety of programs, student services and student activities,” Rose said. “Both offices will continue to have involvement with fraternities and sororities and with volunteer programs.”
The changes are meant to highlight the strengths of the different offices within Student Affairs, Rose said.
“I believe that the creativity and imagination of the Campus Life staff will help to extend an already successful volunteer service program even further,” Rose said.
However, leaders of the greek community disagreed with Rose’s statements and said they didn’t understand why the change was necessary.
In a statement to Pipe Dream from Interfraternity Council President Eric Feuer, leaders of the different greek councils said they believed they were a significant part of campus life, setting up on-campus events such as Greek God, Ms. Aphrodite, Greek Week and general fundraising.
“We are not a bunch of drinking clubs off campus,” Feuer, a junior political science major and news writer for Pipe Dream, said. “We are students who combine our strengths to actively participate and enrich the life of this campus.”
“That’s why it is called ‘campus life,’” he added.
The greek council leaders are scheduled to meet with Rose on Tuesday. In the statement, Feuer said he thinks Rose will listen to the concerns of students.
