The Binghamton University men’s golf team did their best impression of the U.S. Ryder Cup team (minus Boo Weekley) to win the Colgate Invitational.
The Bearcats cruised to the team title and individual title at Seven Oaks Golf Course in Hamilton, N.Y., this past weekend.
Following up their third place showing at the Rutgers Invitational, BU shot scores of 302 and 304 for a weekend total of 606, eclipsing runner-up Saint Francis (Pa.) by 12 strokes in a 12-team field.
On Saturday, led by rounds of 73 by junior Mike Corbo and 74 by sophomore Jake Katz, the Bearcats hung on to a one-stroke lead going into the final day of the competition. Individually, both Corbo and Katz were also in the top 10, finishing tied for fourth and eighth, respectively.
But tough course conditions turned on the field for the second day.
“The greens were very quick and very fast; you had to be on top of your game,” said BU head coach Bernie Herceg.
The quick greens made it very difficult for players to putt and stick approach shots, as evidenced by the scoring. Only 23 of the 59 players in the field broke 80 on Sunday.
The Bearcats were dealt another blow when sophomore Mike Surdey, after firing a round of 77 on Saturday, had to withdraw from Sunday’s round due to illness. “We thought he had a double ear infection, but he called me last night and it turns out he has mono[nucleosis],” Herceg said.
Surdey’s withdrawal meant all of Binghamton’s four remaining players’ scores on Sunday counted toward their final total. This seemingly made the Bearcats more focused, as all players shot under 80 en route to the 12-stroke victory. Notable performances came from senior J.J. Shearer and sophomore Andrew Marler, who shot 76 and 77, respectively.
Corbo won individual medalist honors in a much more thrilling fashion. Corbo’s 74 on Sunday had him tied for first with a two-day total of 147 (+3), sending him into a sudden death match with Julien Prolux of Laval. Starting at the 10th hole, Corbo almost holed-out the par 4, settling for a birdie, which was matched by Prolux. After bogeys on the 11th and pars on the 12th, Corbo shut the door on the 13th hole, birding the short par 4 and taking home the hardware for the Bearcats.
“[His] ball striking has been very good; he never let the course get to him,” Herceg said.
Katz finished in fifth place, shooting a weekend score of 151 (+7), while Marler and Shearer finished tied for 15th place with weekend scores of 155 (+11).
The Bearcats are in action again from Sunday, Sept. 28, to Tuesday, Sept. 30, in what may be their toughest field of the year at the America Sky Championship in North Falmouth, Mass. The AS championship is hosted by the University of Hartford.
