The Foo Fighters ‘ who were nominated for five Grammy Awards yesterday morning ‘ will be performing at Binghamton University next semester, said members of the Student Association University Programming Board Thursday evening.

The Friday, Feb. 22 concert, which includes two opening acts that have yet to be announced, will be held in the Events Center at 7 p.m. Tickets go on sale Monday.

According to Sandi Dube, vice president for University Programming, event planners were looking for an act that would satisfy a broad audience, and members are confident that this choice will ensure a ‘big draw.’

The decision came within a two-week time period, and Dube said the board was quick to ‘jump on’ the opportunity.

‘It was perfect timing,’ she said. ‘We’re counting on a sell-out.’

This semester’s Gym Class Heroes concert was successful enough that the board is comfortable that they will have enough for both the Foo Fighters’ visit and a Spring Fling show ‘ which Dube said requires a minimum of $40,000 to $50,000.

‘At this point I can’t really comment about whether or not it [the Foo Fighters concert] will be profitable, but the goal of every show is to not spend any of your budget,’ she added. ‘But if we do spend a little bit of it, it will be OK because, due to the fact that Gym Class Heroes made money, we’re very secure in our budget this year.’

According to Garrett Dorfman, concert chair of the SAPB, both he and Dube had been trying to bring another big name to campus ever since they both worked on the Green Day concert during their freshman years.

‘We’ve always been looking for the good show,’ Dorfman said. ‘We were always looking for the big show, and we finally got it.’

Dube agreed.

‘It’s about time, that’s all I have to say,’ she said. ‘It’s about time.’

A string of less-than-successful shows left Dube’s office with considerable debt, and in an interview last year, Dube said that the debt had been amassed by more than just one year’s worth of concerts.

The Foo Fighters will be heading to Binghamton 12 days after the Grammy Awards, and Dube is hoping the band comes up big.

‘This is just icing on the cake for the kind of things that we [SABP] can do and really prove to the campus what the programming board can accomplish with the right people in place,’ she said. ‘I think it will bring a lot to the student body and make a lot of people happy. A lot of crappy things have been happening lately, I think this is definitely something that will uplift everyone’s spirits.’
