In its first two dual-meet tournaments of the season, the Bearcats have gone 4-4, posting an 0-3 record against nationally ranked teams, and 4-1 against non-ranked teams.

In the Journeyman/Brute Sprawl and Brawl, the first tournament of the season, the Bearcats suffered a 36-8 loss to No. 14 Penn State, with its only victories coming from juniors Josh Patterson and Corey Waite. The 184-pound Patterson, who went 4-0 for the day, had an especially impressive victory, defeating No. 13 Phil Bomberger in a 17-1 technical fall.

The Bearcats also came up short against North Carolina, losing 27-10, despite another strong effort from Patterson, who, along with 133-pound junior Rob Slavin and 125-pound sophomore Tyler Malmberg, posted victories in the tough loss.

Binghamton did, however, post two impressive victories, annihilating Wagner College and American International College by a combined 89 points. In their first matchup of the day, the Bearcats shut out Wagner, 54-0, and ended the tournament, defeating AIC 35-3, losing only one match.

The second tournament, the Journeyman/Brute Northeast duals, wasn’t as impressive as their first, although the Bearcats did come out at .500.

The team started off losing to No. 1-ranked Iowa, 45-0. Patterson recorded his second loss of the season to the hands of No. 3 Phil Keddy, who defeated Patterson in a 4-1 decision. This was as close as any Bearcat could get, facing the nation’s highest-ranked wrestling team, which boasts a staggering seven nationally ranked top-20 players.

Binghamton bounced back with a 31-9 victory against Brown University, but fell again afterward to another nationally ranked team, No. 22 Lehigh, with a final margin of 33-6. The only two victories of the game came from 125-pound freshman Andrew Bloss, who went 2-2 for the day, and junior standout Josh Patterson, who convincingly pinned No. 12 David Craig, giving Patterson a 3-1 record for the day, 11-2 overall.

The day ended with Binghamton defeating UNC Greensboro in a thrilling 22-18 game, coming back from a 15-10 deficit to win the game. Josh Patterson and Corey Waite sealed the game with back-to-back consecutive pins, bringing Binghamton back from behind to finish the tournament with a 2-2 record, leaving the Bearcats 4-4 overall.
