The Binghamton University track and field team was split this weekend between the Cornell Invitational and the Collegiate Invitational in New York City.

One Bearcat, Adam Hill, attended both meets, competing in New York on Friday and Cornell on Saturday.

“[Hill] didn’t perform as well as he wanted” in the 3,000-meter dash on Friday said BU head coach Mike Thompson. Thompson and his staff decided to take Hill to Ithaca on Saturday and have him run the mile for some extra training. The result was a personal and school record-setting performance of 4:21.1. That broke a 35-year-old mark set by Paul Mucci.

Thompson wasn’t surprised Hill broke the record, but that he broke the record after running in Manhattan the day before.

Chris Gaube also broke a school record Saturday, with an 8:29.77 finish in the 3,000-meter dash. That record was 25 years old.

“It was the best performance of the weekend,” Thompson said.

Gaube shed nine seconds off his personal best, yet wasn’t content. He wanted to qualify for the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America postseason meet, but he missed the qualifying time by .27 seconds. Thompson said that Gaube would take this weekend’s home meet off in order to rest, but would have another chance to qualify for the IC4A at the America East Championship in two weeks.

All-American Rory Quiller didn’t have his best meet, jumping just 17-4, just 9 inches short of his best. Thompson said it wasn’t a matter of Quiller reaching the height, but that his takeoff was a little faulty as he wasn’t getting the pole far enough into the pit. Quiller qualified for the NCAA Indoor National Championship in his first meet of the season. He placed second in this meet.

On the women’s pole vaulting side, Katie Wilmer placed second with a jump of 10-10. Thompson described her jump as “average” and said he was confident she can perform better.

Thompson said he was impressed with Caitlin Wright, who placed third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 26.44 and also “ran a great leg in the four-by-four.”

The Bearcats have a home meet against Syracuse and Albany at 5 p.m. Friday in the Events Center.
