Binghamton isn’t exactly known for its good weather. In fact, it’s been named the seventh gloomiest city in the United States. Cloudiness and rain showers are staples in the Southern Tier’s weather forecasts and are, unsurprisingly, expected throughout the next week. But overcast skies at the end of summer don’t need to bring you down, because while Binghamton’s criminal weather is backed up by fact, the notion that there is nothing to do here is definitely not. These are a few activities to consider when an after-class stroll through the nature preserve seems less than ideal.

Painting at Uncorked Creations

Regardless of whether or not you consider yourself to be an artist, painting can be the perfect way to de-stress. Located above 205 Dry, Uncorked Creations offers an open studio four days a week where you can pick out ceramic pieces to paint with friends. If you’re looking for a more structured approach, you can register for one of their themed painting classes that run throughout each month. The art studio’s cozy environment, full of nooks and tables with lots of natural light, makes it the perfect place to unwind while watching the rain come down from a distance.

Game Nights at Crowbar Arcade

Escape the dreariness outside and replace it with an evening of vibrant neon lights and a retro feel. Crowbar offers nostalgic arcade games like Skee-Ball, pinball and Ms. Pac-Man, along with a bar, food and frequent live shows featuring local and touring bands. Its vintage vibe makes it an ideal place to travel back in time for a few rainy hours. However, keep in mind that Crowbar becomes 21+ after 9 p.m.

Bowling in the Union Undergrounds

If you forgot your umbrella and don’t want to make the trip downtown, head to the bowling alley located in the Union Undergrounds to hit strikes with friends. While bowling shoes cost 50 cents, admission is free for both undergraduate and graduate students. It’s easy to overlook the on-campus bowling alley even if you pass it often, but bad weather provides the perfect excuse to take advantage of the space and create more memories on campus with your friends.

Attending an Open Mic at the Food Co-op

After a few rounds of bowling, grab a bite to eat at the Food Co-op, Binghamton University’s student-run vegan cafe, which is set to open soon on Sept. 3. The Food Co-op frequently hosts open mics in collaboration with organizations like the Poetry Club, so look out for upcoming events posted on their Instagram. If an open mic ever falls on a rainy day, it might just be the perfect opportunity to settle down inside and enjoy some live poetry and music by talented peers.

Studying at a Local Cozy Cafe

If you don’t have time to get away from your books, keep in mind that stormy days can create an unmatched studying ambience — especially when paired with one of Binghamton’s coziest cafes. If you want to get work done with a great view of rain falling onto the street, head downtown to Washington Street’s Strange Brew Cafe. For chill music, comfy chairs and an old-fashioned industrial aesthetic, try Sole City Coffee. And if you prefer warm lighting and rustic charm, try out the Old Barn Market & Gluten Free Bakery. Sip an iced latte, lock in to your work and enjoy the calming patter of Binghamton’s signature rainfall outside.
