The much anticipated plans for the renovation of the Old University Union will be announced at a town hall meeting on Thursday.
The meeting will be hosted by Rodger Summers, vice president for student affairs; James VanVoorst, vice president for administration; Mike Schiffman, Student Association president; and David Belsky, executive vice president of the SA. There will be two meetings on the subject on Thursday in the Old Union, room 133 ‘ one from 4 to 5 p.m and another from 7 to 8 p.m.
According to VanVoorst, the first half of the meeting will be a presentation of the possible functions of the building, and the second half will be a question and answer session.
A PowerPoint presentation created by Ken Burns, one of the project coordinators on the Physical Facilities staff, will be featured at the town hall meeting.
Belsky said a great deal of time and hard work went into the construction of the plans to be presented.
‘We are presenting one set of plans which is the result of weeks and weeks of compromise between administration, students and staff,’ Belsky said.
Belsky said the meeting was scheduled for the Thursday before Easter/Passover break because students would be more willing to attend before the hectic finals season sets in.
‘This way we get feedback from more students,’ he said. ‘If we wait after the break, students will be too busy studying for finals then to come give input. That’s why we have been rushing to get these plans out.’
VanVoorst said the meeting would be devoted to discussing the physical layout of the building.
‘On Thursday we’re going to talk about the process and look at the block diagram for the new inside layout [of the Old Union],’ he said.
VanVoorst emphasized that the goal of the meeting is for those who attend to ‘hear what we are thinking and give us input.’
Block diagrams will also be available on the Physical Facilities Web site.
