After an upsetting loss to the University of Maryland, Baltimore County on Wednesday, Binghamton University’s men’s soccer team (8-4-3, 3-2-0 AE) will try to bounce back for a must-win against America East rival University of New Hampshire on Saturday night.
With Wednesday’s loss, the Bearcats, currently third in the conference, are slowly falling behind rivals Albany (4-1-1 AE) and Boston University (4-1-1 AE) for first place in the America East Conference. Both teams have nine points (three more than Binghamton) and there are only three games left in the regular season. Between Binghamton’s falling behind the AE race and New Hampshire’s rank in the bottom half of the conference, the team needs a win Saturday night.
The Wildcats (6-4-4, 1-3-2 AE) come into Saturday’s game ranked sixth in the AE. The Wildcats, who haven’t won a game since Oct. 8, have only one win in their last seven games, but have players on the offensive side that can really threaten a defense.
Junior forward Chris Banks and sophomore midfielder/forward Kyle Urso are ranked first and third in shots per game in the AE, with 3.2 and 2.69, respectively. Banks leads New Hampshire in goals and points with six and 12, while Urso leads the team in assists with five. Both Wildcats also rank in the top 10 in the AE conference in points, goals and game-winning goals.
Binghamton looks to win with their own strong attacking offense led by junior forward Cameron Keith, who has a team-leading five goals and 11 points. However, the Bearcats offense of late has looked very inconsistent, having only scored two goals in the past four games, partly because Binghamton scorers Keith and Cody Germain both hit shots off the post in the first half of the Bearcats’ last game against UMBC on Wednesday.
Despite the inconsistent offense, Binghamton has stayed in the top three of the conference due to a solid defense led by goalkeeper Jason Stenta. Stenta has eight shutouts this year and the fifth-ranked save percentage in the nation at 0.896. It is because of that defense that Binghamton fans shouldn’t expect to be let down on Saturday as the team is undefeated at home this season, while only giving up only one goal in four games in the Bearcats Sports Complex.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Saturday at the Bearcats Sports Complex.
