After a tough performance in the America Sky Championship Tournament, the Binghamton University men’s golf team, led by senior J.J. Shearer, rebounded this past weekend with a fifth place performance at the Yale MacDonald Cup.
The Bearcats shot a three-round team score of 889, 49 over par on the hilly Yale Golf Course that demands excellent shot-making ability. Binghamton’s continued improvement under head coach Bernie Herceg showed this weekend as the Bearcats improved their two-round total by 37 strokes over last year’s MacDonald Cup, when the tournament was only two rounds long.
The University of Oklahoma won the MacDonald Cup with a team score of 860, 20 strokes over par. The top five was rounded out by tournament host Yale, Bryant University and Sacred Heart University.
Individually, Shearer led Binghamton with a three-round total of 224, 14 over par, good for 23rd place. Shearer’s third-round score of one over par 71 was the low round for the Bearcats.
Sophomore Jake Katz finished one stroke behind Shearer with a 15 over par 225. All the Bearcats played well over the weekend, with junior Mike Corbo, junior Patrick Donovan and sophomore Andrew Marler finishing with weekend totals of 226, 227 and 228, respectively.
The Bearcats head to the Philadelphia Big 5 Invitational this weekend, held at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.
Tee-off for the Invitational is set for Saturday.
