Besides giving you a weekly dose of teen angst, “Gossip Girl” has been providing a spotlight on some up-and-coming bands, like Manchester Orchestra.

The Georgia-based indie rock quintet has been around for a couple of years, and their dynamic sound and poignant lyrics have helped them gain popularity and an ever-growing fan base. Their first full length LP, “I’m Like A Virgin Losing A Child,” penned by then-17-year-old front man Andy Hull, has solidified their position as a musical force to be reckoned with. The band releases its records on its own label, Favorite Gentlemen, which now produces a host of other talented bands and artists such as Winston Audio and All Get Out. You may not have heard of Manchester Orchestra until “Gossip Girl,” but you will soon.

Release talked to drummer Jeremiah Edmund about the past, present and future of Manchester Orchestra.

Release: How has your sound changed from the first EP you ever released to the one that came out Oct. 14, and the upcoming album?

Jeremiah Edmond: I think the sound has changed a lot, mostly due to the band members changing.

I joined the band during the making of what would become the EP and only played on one of the songs. Chris [Freeman, keyboard/vocals] joined before “Virgin” and Robert [McDowell, guitar] joined right after. Because of this, our songs were constantly changing due to the addition of new members. The new album will be the first written with this lineup.

The newer material is louder, darker at times, even more dynamic. I feel like we all have written more interesting parts for these songs as well. We all really pushed ourselves and each other to go beyond what we would normally do and push our boundaries and I think it shows in the songs that we ended up writing.

Release: Who writes what — music, lyrics, etc.?

JE: Andy Hull writes all of the lyrics. He usually comes in with a pretty structured idea for a song, and then we all jam on it for a while and see what it progresses into.

Release: How would you describe the mood or story of the next album?

JE: I don’t think there is really a story. There are reoccurring images and lyrics and themes, but it isn’t a concept album or anything.

I feel like it really goes through several moods as well. Most people will probably find it a bit darker than the last album, at least initially, but there is always more to it than you catch right away.

Release: What are you guys listening to right now?

JE: I have been spending a lot of time listening to the projects Andy and I are working on for Favorite Gentlemen, All Get Out, Kevin Devine and Winston Audio.

Andy just picked up the new Devon The Dude album which we are all excited to hear. The new Dr. Dog gets a lot of play too.

Release: Fill in the blank: If you like __________, then you’ll like Manchester Orchestra.

JE: Rooster Booster.

Release: What is the strangest thing any fan has ever said to you?

JE: This is currently the last comment someone left us on MySpace:

“I friggin’ love your music! I could, like, have sex with you guys! ”

It’s from a 15-year-old male …

Release: How were you approached about having your song, “I Can Feel A Hot One,” used on “Gossip Girl,” and have you noticed an increase in attention since the episode aired?

JE: I am not really sure how it came about. I think that someone at the show contacted our publishing company about it. We definitely saw a surge in online attention [from] people trying to find out who the song was by and then discovering us.

Release: Do you guys watch that show?

JE: A few of us are pretty big fans of the show. I’m pretty sure I’ve even talked about it in an mtvU interview. Our wives and girlfriends flipped out when we got the news.

Release: “Gossip Girl” takes place in Manhattan — where should your New York fans go to see you live?

JE: We have played a few different places [in New York]. The Knitting Factory was great. We included a few songs from the show as bonus content on the DVD we just released.

We aren’t hitting New York on this winter run unfortunately. The closest we are coming is New Jersey. We will be back next year though. We love playing New York and can never seem to stay away for long.

In September, the band announced their winter U.S. tour with Kevin Devine, Dead Confederate and All Get Out. Tickets are available now at frontgatetickets.com
