With the beginning of each new season, sometimes a team might need some warming up before they get into a groove.
Taking part in their first scoring meets of the 2008-09 season, the Binghamton University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams both suffered losses to Boston University. Additionally, the women’s team lost to the University of Vermont.
Bearcat seniors and freshmen gave stellar performances in the tough losses.
Though Boston captured a 132-111 lead over the Binghamton men, the Bearcats did not go quietly into the night. Senior Brenno Varanda and freshman Nolan Slesnick led the Bearcats in the water.
Varanda captured a first-place finish in the 200-meter individual medley (1:57.29) and 200-meter breaststroke (2:09.09), while Slesnick edged out Benjamin Kaiser of Boston in the 1,000-meter freestyle with a time of 9:52.27, some 2.15 seconds better than Kaiser’s 9:54.47 finished. In the same race, Slesnick beat out older brother Tyson of Boston U. by 17.24 seconds. Slesnick also claimed a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle (4:47.18) and finished up the weekend with a third place finish in the 200 IM (1:59.00).
Junior Philip Dzieniszewski took first in the 50 free (1.56) and junior Ziyad Rouhana won the 200-meter butterfly (1:58.42), rounding out the men’s squad.
Over in the diving section, senior Ryan Graham captured a second place finish in both the one-meter (254.70) and three-meter boards (276.53). He was followed by freshman Nick Turner, who placed fourth on the one-meter (229.30) and three-meter boards (264.90).
On the women’s side, the Bearcats lost to both Boston University, 56-187, and the University of Vermont, 86.5-156.5.
On the three-meter board, senior Kate Hassfurter placed third (243.80) while freshman Morgan Neal placed fourth on the one meter (196.50).
In the water, sophomore Amanda Ciccone finished third in the 50 free, timed at 25.26 seconds, only .84 seconds behind first-placed finisher, Boston’s Kirsten Tullis. Sophomore Lyndsi Worthington finished third in the 200-meter backstroke (2:11.02).
Both teams are back in action this Saturday, Nov. 1, at University of Maryland, Baltimore County. The meet is set to start at 1 p.m.
