Although this season is still young, one member of the Binghamton University men’s wrestling team has already established himself nationally.
Junior Joshua Patterson has been ranked No. 14 by InterMat and No. 9 by WrestlingReport.com. The 184-pound wrestler has been slowly moving up the ranks, starting the year at No. 18, according to InterMat. He has started out the year with a stellar 11-2 record overall, with six pins.
People expected great things from Patterson this year. A senior High School National Champion, he qualified for the Division I NCAA Championships each of his first two years. In his freshman year, he had the second most wins for a BU player in a season in Binghamton’s Division I era. Patterson now has a career record of 60-20.
In the team’s last tournament, Patterson defeated Lehigh junior David Craig, ranked 12th in the nation at the time. It was one of two matches the Bearcats won against No. 22 Lehigh (now No. 10).
“These are the kinds of matches he will need to build on to place at NCAAs,” said Bearcats head coach Pat Popolizio, according to a Binghamton University press release. “With every big win like this, he gains more confidence.”
Teammate and older brother Nathan Patterson, a senior, was ranked No. 30 by WrestlingReport.com for the 157-pound weight group.
