Blink and you just missed history.
The 2008 Summer Olympic Games that just passed were something spectacular. From the venues to the athletes, some things about this past summer’s games were mind-boggling.
Inside the “Bird’s Nest,” the nickname for Beijing National Stadium, lightning struck, and you might have missed it.
On the track, one man stood out.
Usain Bolt, a 22-year-old sprinter from Jamaica, won gold in the 100-meter dash and 200-meter dash, a first since the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics where Carl Lewis captured gold in both events.
But that wasn’t all for Bolt.
Bolt’s remarkable performance earned him the nickname Lightning Bolt, for good reason, too.
The Jamaican sensation broke the world records for both events, solidifying himself as the “World’s Fastest Man,” a title held by a man that holds the world record for the 100 and 200.
With a time of 9.69 seconds for the 100, Bolt broke the world record, previously held by fellow Jamaican, Asafa Powell, by .05 seconds.
What was more impressive was Bolt’s time in the 200.
Bolt broke the world record by only .02 seconds, with a time of 19.30 seconds. The previous world record holder was United States sprinter, Michael Johnson, who held the record for 12 years, since his victory in the 1996 Atlanta Games, running 19.32.
It was amazing to watch how fast this guy ran. And while everyone wants to believe the amazement of such an athlete, you have to step back and remember the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative scandal.
BALCO, an American company that marketed a performance-enhancing steroid, had supplied the drug to several star athletes, including Olympic athletes.
During the scandal, several former sprinters, such as Marion Jones, Tim Montgomery and Justin Gatlin, were stripped of their gold medals and world records after testing positive for banned substances in their systems.
Bolt has stated that he has been tested before and is clean.
While many believe that Bolt is telling the truth, many critics remain skeptical.
I certainly hope he really is just a lightning bolt.
