With each passing second, the familiar sound of stubborn brakes and brash exhaust pipes intensifies. My stop is next. A trace of yellow emerges from the distance. First-day-of-school jitters conveniently make their way to the pit of my stomach. The accordion doors open and, taking in a deep breath, I proceed up the towering steps of the fatigued vehicle. As my foot reaches the top platform, a roaring laughter fills the school bus, nearly knocking me behind the wheel and into Sweet Lou’s lap. When my eyes regain focus, I realize that the pointing and jeering is directed toward me. I undergo an out-of-body experience, enabling me to see my stark naked body displayed for the entire bus and Sweet Lou’s viewing pleasure.

The majority of students on campus have admitted to experiencing similar nightmares pertaining to public nudity. Is it due to the insecurities many of us share about our own body image? Most people are convinced that they have mastered the art of concealing these insecurities. Contrary to the popular belief, the act of concealing our flaws usually ends up biting us in our fat asses (which we cleverly try to obscure with a sweater wrapped around the waist). The plan backfires when we draw attention to the body parts that do not measure up to impractical standards set by society. We must rid ourselves of the insecurities that have placed a damper on too many lives … and ’90s inspired hair scrunchies that will never come back in style. The fashion gurus have spoken and the verdict is in … Uggs are out this winter and self-confidence tops the list of this season’s must-haves.

Our wardrobes are accurate reflections of the way we are feeling, and in turn affect the way we act on a day-to-day basis. For instance, when one is confident, she is more likely to adorn herself in clothing that flaunts her finest assets. Her personality is able to shine through, revealing that she is comfortable in her own skin. On the other hand, one who is burdened by self-doubt is inhibited by daunting insecurities. She is too preoccupied with concerns about thunder thighs to enjoy the company of those around her. If our attire is a determinant of the level of self-confidence we possess, then being secure with our own nakedness (flaws and all) should guarantee a “good day” every time we step out of the house or even back into bed.

It is time to strip away the garments we use to mask our lack of self-confidence. Step in front of your full length “skinny” mirror and learn to appreciate each and every body part. Remember that while you are conjuring up ways to conceal your curvaceous booty, someone else is stressing over how she can add more junk to her trunk. Rather than completely turning off the lights when you are spending quality time with a significant other, deem for a dimmed-lit room with partial visibility. However, you must keep in mind that there are certain bodily irregularities that only a mother can love. This includes, but is not limited to: third nipples, webbed toes and moles located where “the sun don’t shine.” As of now, we can only hope that someday the decency of indecent exposure will no longer be ignored.
