A NEW GREEN CAMPUS

Recycled materials have been used in some of the construction of new buildings, according to Physical Facilities spokeswoman Karen Fennie.

Fennie said that updated facilities at Binghamton University will be “green buildings.”

“The process we use in building construction will help conserve energy,” Fennie said. “Our goal is to make buildings that are helpful to the environment, as well as to meet the needs of students and researchers.”

EAST CAMPUS HOUSING UPDATE

The first new dorm for East Campus Housing is being completed on schedule, Fennie said. Steel is currently being installed inside the building, which is being constructed next to Bingham Hall in Newing College.

Fennie said construction workers will begin constructing the exterior walls for the building next week.

According to the Physical Facilities Web site, the East Campus Housing steering and planning committees are continuing to meet on a regular basis to monitor the progress of the project.

The building is scheduled to be completed in August 2009.

ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE BUILDING

Another new addition to BU’s growing collection of facilities is the construction of the engineering and science building within the Innovative Technologies Complex. Construction on the project began in September, and workers recently began installing the foundation and utilities for the energy-efficient $66 million building.

The steel delivery and installation process is expected to take approximately three months. The project is expected to be completed in August 2011.

OLD UNIVERSITY UNION RENOVATIONS

Renovations on the Old University Union are scheduled to be complete by August 2009.

According to Fennie, the renovation plans were developed with a lot of student input.

“I think it will be a good useable space for students and student groups,” she said.

Currently, the contractor is working on installing new windows along with new electric, plumbing and heating utilities. According to the Physical Facilities Web site, the project will allow BU’s campus to better balance electrical loads and to allow for more effective maintenance of the system.

SCIENCE V BUILDING

Construction should begin on Science V within the next month, Fennie said.

The building will be located on the plaza deck between Science III and Science IV. According to Fennie, the stairway that runs through the science complex and plaza will be off-limits once the project starts.

Detours for students, Fennie said, will be provided during this time.

“We will be replacing the whole plaza deck, in addition to constructing the new building,” Fennie said.
