The Binghamton University baseball team fell one win short Wednesday of carrying a 10-game win streak into the second half of its America East Conference schedule.

The Bearcats (19-22, 7-5 AE) fell to the Le Moyne Dolphins 18-2 at Varsity Field in BU’s final game against a non-conference opponent this season, a lopsided defeat the Bearcats have already put behind them.

BU head coach Tim Sinicki did not speak to his players about the loss directly after the game, choosing instead to look forward to this weekend’s four-game series with the host Vermont Catamounts (20-17, 6-6).

“We forget about it as a team,” Sinicki said. “You play one of those games every once in awhile. We move on to more important things on plate in front of us.”

Binghamton, in second place, sends senior ace Zach Groh (3-3) to the mound in the first game, scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday.

After a rocky start to the season, Groh has allowed just one earn run over his last two starts, striking out 10 and walking two in 13 2/3 innings. That’s good timing for the Bearcats, who are aiming to capture a second consecutive AE regular season title.

“Vermont’s always a decent team, they do the fundamental things right,” Groh said. “This is a big weekend for us: we have 12 more games left and we pretty much hold our own fate right now. If we take series and win series, we’ll be in the conference championship.”

Groh is scheduled to face Vermont junior left-hander Joe Serafin (4-3), whose 3.20 ERA is a team best. Serafin allowed six runs in seven innings to Albany last Friday.

The fourth-place Catamounts are the conference’s second-best hitting team with a .307 average and third-best pitching team, with a 5.31 ERA.

Sophomore Justin Milo, a designated hitter who transferred from Cornell, leads Vermont with a .351 average and 33 RBI. His five home runs tie him for the team best with senior third baseman Miguel Magrass, who missed last season due to an eligibility issue. Magrass is batting .331.

The Catamounts played in a blowout game of their own Wednesday, but came out on the winning side, 17-4 over the University of Massachusetts. Magrass went 3-for-4 and Milo drove in five.

Offensively, five Bearcats are batting over .300, with senior Ryan James at the top of the pack with a .321 average. Sophomore left fielder Joe Charron has been Binghamton’s best power threat, with six home runs, matching his career high, and a team-best .503 slugging percentage.

“I think we’re in good shape,” Sinicki said. “We’re as ready as we could be.”

The Bearcats took two of three games from the Catamounts last season.

The series continues with a doubleheader at noon Saturday. Sunday’s series finale is scheduled for 1 p.m.
