Pipe Dream has spent the last several weeks giving out awards and accolades to the Binghamton student athletes. Here are a couple more that we wanted to hand out as parting gifts:

Lifetime achievement award: Zach Groh, baseball: Two years ago he was snubbed by our old editor when it came down to hand out Pipe Dream’s Athlete of the Year award, this year we right the wrong and give Groh this award to honor what he’s done in the past five years. Since coming back from shoulder surgery three years ago, Groh has been one of the most dominating pitchers in the America East and one of the most fun athletes to watch at this school. His streak of 42 innings without allowing an earned run stands as one of the most remarkable feats ever achieved at this school.

Team on the rise, women: Women’s lacrosse: Don’t be surprised if the single season record for wins in a season, set this year, gets broken again in the near future. Only three seniors will graduate, and four of the top five scorers from last season were freshmen this year and 16 players on the team were either freshmen or sophomores. The Northeast is great to recruit from, and head coach Tony Zostant has already left his mark on this team, so expect another batch of talented young players next season.

Team on the rise, men: Wrestling: Does anyone realize that Josh Patterson is only a sophomore? And that he’s already been to two NCAA Championships? The team, which has increased its win total in each of the past two seasons, also returns standouts Nate Patterson, Anwar Goeres, Ryan Mcgarity and Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year Tyler Malmberg. Expect multiple grapplers to head to the NCAA’s next year, and if Rory Quiller’s brother doesn’t take home a national title, a wrestler is a good bet to be BU’s next best hope.

Team we really hope gets over the hump: Men’s lacrosse: More so even than men’s basketball because an America East lacrosse team can make noise, this team is key to getting the Bearcats some recognition. AE lacrosse is for real, Albany was ranked as high as No. 2 last year and Maryland-Baltimore County has been ranked in the top 10 all season. Long Island and Western New York are arguably the top two places for lacrosse talent so the prospects are there, now BU must get them and turn them into winners.

Real MVP of BU Athletics: David O’Brian, Sports Information: Sorry Dave, I told you I wouldn’t be doing a farewell column, but I had to give you thanks. There is no greater friend to this newspaper than DOB, a guy who knows more about his sports than any man probably should. I could never have done this job without him, so again, thanks for everything Dave.
