Baseball wins three

The Binghamton baseball team went 3-0 over the weekend, rallying to defeat Long Island University 3-2 in overtime on Friday before downing LIU again 12-2 and Lafayette 3-1 on Saturday in Brooklyn. Senior second baseman Matt Simek was named America East Co-Player of the Week after hitting .667 with one home run and three RBI. Freshman right fielder Joe Charron was named AE Rookie of the Week after belting two home runs and hitting .417 over the weekend.

On Friday, Brendan Hitchcock drove in Ryan James with an RBI triple in the 10th inning to give the Bearcats a 3-2 lead. Junior Khalid Afify then shut down the Blackbirds in order in the bottom half of the inning to seal the win. Zach Groh made the start for the Bearcats, going six innings and allowing one run off two hits.

BU scored eight runs in the eighth inning in the first game on Saturday to put LIU off for good. Simek went 4-5 with a home run and two RBI, while Charron went 3-6 with a home run and three RBI. Sophomore catcher Michael Quinn went 3-3 for the Bearcats. Senior Mike Van Gorder got the win, improving to 2-1 and lowering his AE-best ERA to 0.57. He allowed six hits and struck out three.

In the final game, sophomore lefty Jeff Dennis allowed two hits and one run over seven innings to lead the Bearcats. Charron and Kyle Klee each hit solo home runs for Binghamton, which heads to Utah for a three-game set against Brigham Young University next weekend.

Tennis sweeps weekend

The women’s tennis team opened up the weekend with a 7-0 victory over America East foe Hartford on Saturday, before downing reigning Northeastern Conference champ Quinnipiac 4-3 the next day.

Against Hartford the Bearcats dropped just two games overall, two at first singles and one at first doubles.

On Sunday, Zeynep Altinay and Nicole Scarangella won the final two singles matches of the day to lead the Bearcats to the come-from-behind victory. The win, which raised the Bearcats’ record to 8-1, is the third they have recorded over a 2006 NCAA tournament team. Erica Rosenblum and Danyelle Shapiro also recorded victories for BU.

The team heads home to take on the New Jersey Institute of Technology Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in the Events Center.

Softball game canceled

Tomorrow’s softball home opener against Marist has been canceled. No makeup date has been announced.
