Parking on campus will be more customer and eco-friendly, thanks to a new meter installed in the lot between the Glenn G. Bartle Library and Lecture Hall.
The pay-by-space, solar-powered meter allows drivers to purchase as much parking time as they need at a rate of 50 cents per hour. The single machine, which spits out a receipt, meters parking for 25 spaces.
Parking Services had installed the same device in Lot M in spring 2007 for 33 spaces.
“We heard a lot of customers say they liked the flexibility,” said Daniel Chambers, deputy chief of Binghamton’s New York State University Police.
The previous library meters only took quarters and ran on nine-volt batteries. The new meter takes coins and bills. Its battery recharges from the sun, reducing its carbon footprint.
Chambers, who oversees Parking Services, said the University will see how customers react to the new meter before installing more on campus.
