After an inauspicious beginning at the 11th Annual Rensselaer Polytechnic University Invitational, Binghamton University water polo adapted in the face of adversity over the weekend in Troy, N.Y.

The Bearcats squared off against RPI and Coast Guard Academy twice each and ended with a 2-2 split in their four competitions.

After starting the weekend off with a rather sloppy performance against RPI, losing 7-4 as a result, BU got the chance to redeem itself against its New York Division rival in a rematch to begin tournament play.

In the rematch, senior Nicholas Drohan led BU’s offensive attack with five goals en route to a 9-4 victory over an RPI squad that was sporting a significantly larger roster. The split of the RPI matchups placed both teams in a 2-2 tie over the four times that the rivals have met up between New York Division play and tournament competition.

The weekend was highlighted by a 9-2 win over Coast Guard B. Over the course of the matchup, juniors Tina Billingiere and Pete Dziuk scored their first goals ever in tournament competition, and rookie goalie Deniz Pehlivan continued to shine between the pipes.

Binghamton heads south to the University of Tennessee for the UT Dogwood Invitational this weekend.
