The weekend is coming closer and you’ve yet to find the perfect outfit. You’re used to the trendy boutiques and higher-end stores that you can find at home. You scream after a trip to the Oakdale Mall (trust me, we’ve all done it). Well, never fear because the store you’re looking for may be closer than you think.
M.Y. Boutique, located at 134 Washington St. in Downtown Binghamton, sells a variety of higher-end clothing that you wouldn’t find anywhere else in the area. The store features clothing from Free People, BCBG, Seven for all Mankind, Joe’s Jeans, Citizens for Humanity, Lucky Brand and many more.
Run and managed by two Binghamton University students, Anna Bear Dallis, a junior accounting major and Candice Geller, a marketing and leadership consulting major, M.Y. Boutique, which opened a year and a half ago, offers great alternatives to what else is offered in the area.
“There’s a need in Binghamton for clothes that you can’t get at the mall,” Dallis said. “You would normally have to drive to Syracuse to get these clothes.”
Although the clothing and accessories are slightly expensive, BU students get a 10 percent discount with their student IDs. There is also a sale section of the store where items are 50 percent off.
The store is adorably set up and has a very cute, fun atmosphere, perfect for shopping. It also seems like a store you would find buried away on a New York City street, clearly not a typical Binghamton store.
Sheetal Shah, junior English major and an employee at the store, loves the idea of M.Y. Boutique.
“It’s great because its good quality clothing and girls our age pick it all out, so we are getting items that people actually want to wear,” Shah said.
Dallis and Geller travel to trade shows several times a year and pick out clothing for every season, so they can offer customers a variety, while remaining consistent with the seasons and fashion trends. However, the managers need to keep in mind who their clientele is.
“There are clothes that will work in New York City and not in Binghamton so we always need to remember that,” Dallis explained.
Many students find that it is difficult to shop in Binghamton because there isn’t the same variety of stores as there are in other areas, such as Westchester and Long Island. Stacey Levine, senior history major, likes that the boutique gives students the options to buy higher-end clothing.
“There aren’t many great stores in the mall, and its cool that there is a designer boutique in our area,” Levine said.
While a good deal of its business comes from BU students, M.Y. Boutique also services the local community. According to Dallis, there are a lot of high school students, as well as older clients, shopping for their children.
“I like that I’m contributing to revitalizing Downtown Binghamton,” Dallis said. “In a way I’m making a difference in the city and bringing students Downtown.”
M.Y Boutique also hosts several events a semester, such as a fashion show at Dillinger’s, located on State Street, which was held on Thursday. The store holds such events in hopes of gaining more customers and letting everyone know what the boutique has to offer. Their clothing and accessories are modeled by girls in sororities at BU as well as the women’s rugby team.
While being in school and managing a small store may sound near impossible, Dallis and Geller say they are doing just fine.
“I get everything done,” Dallis said. “It’s definitely a lot of work, but fun at the same time.”
